These are not polished and appear to have a matte rather than shiny appearance.

You may also need to wash it often as birds stop by to leave their droppings on its spindle. Failure to wash the bird droppings would result in inaccurate wind and weather predictions. After you wash off the droppings or anything else that may get caught in the spindle, it would not hurt to add some for of lubricant to ensure a free spin.
